Junior Programs
We offer a wide variety of programs for kids at Birchwood. Starting in May, there are after-school clinics for all levels and ages. Once school ends, kids ages 8+ love the tennis camp offered weekly Monday - Friday 11:00 to 3:00.
Adult Clinics & Private Lessons
Are you a beginner or have years of experience and want to polish your skills? Birchwood offers all levels of group lessons for men and women who want to learn the game or meet some new people to play with. It’s easy to join in!

Birchwood hosts several teams for Men and Women that compete in USTA Adult Leagues.

Birchwood Hosts many fun events for members and their friends including member-guest days, round-robins, and Friday night adult mixers.

Want to see your name engraved on the Birchwood Trophy? Sign up for one of the annual club championships. We host: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Junior tournaments every year.
Our Pros
Thad Hughes has been the Head Pro at Birchwood since 2004. He is currently the head coach for the men's and women's varsity teams at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville. Thad has also been teaching at Club Fit Briarcliff since 2013, and before that was Director of Tennis at Westchester Indoor Tennis Club. Thad received his P-1 level US Professional Tennis Association certification shortly after attending the University of Nevada-Reno, where he played D1 tennis.
Thad started playing tennis competitively as a 10 year old and competed on state and national levels throughout his teenage years. He played in every national junior tennis tournament in the country and was ranked in the top 10 in National Juniors. He trained under the legendary Australian Tennis Coach, Harry Hopman.
Lena Gölz is the new Assistant Pro starting this season. She graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2022 and Middle Georgia state in 2024, where she was selected „All-American” 4 years in a row and she received the “Player of the Year” award from the NAIA. Lena is a PTR certified tennis professional and has been a tennis teaching since 2012. She played international tournaments starting at the age of 14 until she went to college. Prior to coming to Birchwood, she taught at the West Side Tennis Club (former Club of the US Open) as well as the Greenwich Country club. She now spends winters teaching at New Rochelle Racquet Club.

Justin Loeb is one of the new tennis professional staff at Birchwood. A native of Ossining, NY, Justin began playing tennis at the age of four at Club Fit in Briarcliff and has been immersed in the sport ever since. He comes from a highly accomplished tennis family, with three siblings who all played collegiate tennis—his youngest sister currently competes professionally on the WTA Tour.
Justin has been a USPTA-certified tennis professional since 2006 and brings over 20 years of coaching experience. He began his teaching career at Club Fit and went on to serve as Head Tennis Professional at Seven Bridges Field Club in Chappaqua from 2007 through 2024.
In addition to his extensive on-court experience, Justin holds a Master’s Degree in Physical Education and has taught high school physical education for the past 17 years. He also has seven years of experience coaching high school tennis.
At Birchwood, Justin will be assisting weekend clinics and is available for private, semi-private, and group lessons. We are thrilled to have him as part of our team and look forward to the expertise and enthusiasm he brings to our tennis program.
Pro Shop
Hank Quinn was a player and teaching pro well known on the tennis circuit in the pre-Open era. He was the coach of the victorious US Davis Cup team in 1948. Hank was the first tennis pro at Birchwood starting with the club opening in 1961 and served for two and a half decades through the mid 1980s. For these reasons, the Birchwood Tennis Hut and Club Championship Trophy are named in honor of Hank Quinn.
